Yes, Mer people do exist.
"Merman, will this passageway not lead us to the sea?"
The mer people peer askance at a cryptic sign for water.
"...and farewell ye humans of the Crescent City! May your year upon land prosper and the Big Easy stay afloat. Members of the Mer Clan shall keep a watchful eye upon your waters and continue to gather and guard the wisdom of all eternal time!" The Mermaid's peroration before reuniting with the water.
Emerging from the depths of the muddy Mississippi, Merman King of the Mer Clan shakes his tail to rid the river residue.
